  2. Hello Nanette, I feel pain when I read all about your theeth. What is the reason for you to do this in Bangkok? I have one implantat and it took about 6-7 month from extraction untill finish. In Bangkok they can make it cheaper and faster?
Good and fast recovery for you/ and a good trip home.
Actually I am in Italy ( Garda Lake) .
    Greetings from Barbara

  5. Glad to hear everyone is safe. Sorry we missed you. Grandson was playing ball and granddaughter had cheer competition. Hopefully next time!

  6. Glad to hear you are well and safe. It has been quite some time since your last update on how and what you have been doing. You definitely are more active than Barb & I.

Please take care and stay safe….

    • Good to hear from you. I tried to email you but it bounced to the email you used. Try to email Neil or I so we have your new email address.

  8. Aloha Nan,

Al and I were just talking about you both. A friend of ours inquired about their daughter getting married on Maui. They were looking for some services. They are from Ohio.
I wanted to give your name as a referral.

We are still in Bellville Ohio.

  9. It is joyful to read of your year & see it in pictures. I can’t believe Quentin is in college! How the years fly by. Wishing you and Neil a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year.
    Love,
    Jill

  10. Lovely to hear some news from you. My 17 year old eldest granddaughter Kaylah is also off to university soon, my son Neil’s daughter. I fell in love with her at first sight when she was just one hour old! Robert and I are keeping well and finding lots to do in Charlestown, our new city. He is visiting a local nursing home on a regular basis and I have joined a small singing group which also entertains at nursing homes in the area.

    • Great to hear from you Danuta! So happy to hear you and Robert are doing well. Sounds like you stay very busy. Congratulation to Kaylah. It is a great accomplishment. Aloha, Nan

  11. Hello Nanette,
I love to hear from you and read about your life.
Sometimes we will make it happen to see us again after all this years. It was 1990 in Club Med, Mauritius.
Maybe our son, Tom, will come to your island earlier than me, because he will finish school next year and wants to travel all over the world. I don´t know from whom he has this ideas!
Lots of love from your german friend Barbara

    • Merry Christmas Barbara, I hope you had a wonderful day. Ours is still going in Hawaii. When Neil gets home from work, we will go next door to his parents for presents in the evening. It would be great to see you again if you come to the middle of the Pacific. I think most of our vacation time will be going to see our grandson for the next few years! If Tom does get this way, let’s make sure he has our contact information. We have a small cottage but there is space to sleep on our lanai (covered deck).

  12. Thank you for including me still! I love to read how you and Neil are doing and boy are you two busy! You didn’t say how Neil got the road rash! I’m glad he’s okay! I was thrown from a motorcycle many years ago and got rash up one arm and leg. It wasn’t very deep but truly painful!

Divorce finally happened and I’ve been single for a year and two weeks now. I miss Maui, but not the dust, heat, and chemicals in all the soil! What has happened to all the cane fields now that the sugar industry is done?

Still in Juneau with the house on the market, then heading to either Washington state or perhaps moving back to Norway, still on the fence. Miss your smile! Take care. Katie

    • Hi Katie, Wow, big changes happening in your life. Good to hear from you and glad you are doing well. I will be interested to hear if it is Washington or Norway or where you decide to go next. A jeep cut Neil off when he was riding the scooter and he got some serious road burns on both legs, very deep at the leg/foot connection and he was on the couch for 3 months with them elevated most of the time to heal. As far as I can tell, the cane fields are still “open” except there was one small section growing Sunflowers for bio-fuel. Have a wonderful new year!

  13. How amazing that would be if they did have 71 different coffees hehe. Love hearing how affordable a hair cut can be there and how smooth the dental work went!

    • Yes, 71 Coffee was a funny name till I understood it was the road number, ha. I am still writing but delayed with some house projects! More to come.

  14. Even dental work can be exotic! I don’t have any dental insurance either. And I haven’t had for over 13 years. I’m very lucky that I have really good teeth and a dentist that only charges me $175 for a cleaning. I have needed a crown over the years but that was about it. I now realize how lucky I am. On the other hand I haven’t been to Thailand! Love you

  15. Hello Nanette,
it is so wonderful to hear about your life. We met 26 years ago!!
Maybe sometimes you and Neil will come to Germany?
I changed my Email adress as you can see.
    Lots of love from Barbara

    • Hi Barbara, thanks for continuing follow our adventures. Not sure when our travels will take us to Germany with the new grandson but would love to see you sometime. Stay Warm!

  16. Dear Nan, I also love mangos, both green and ripe, and also nice ripe avocados. I live in Colombia (Bogotá), and not far, to hour trip, it is posible to harvest them. The only but is that locally it is díffiult to buy a good long extension picking pole, liker the one you mention 16 feet.

If you can help me suggesting some picking pole brands, may be I can find the way to buy it via internet. The longest, would be interesting for the trees I harvest.

Thanking in advance! Continue enjoying your mangos, I share some of them with bats and beautiful green parrots, and the avocados with the shrews, and … of course with the family.

    Roberto

    • Aloha Roberto, Mango season is over for us but we froze some juice so we’re still able to enjoy a little mango flavor in the mornings.

Neil looked up the type of pole we use on Amazon. The pole has a threaded top designed for cleaning accessories but he was able to use a hose clamp to attach the picker basket to the top. Here are the Amazon links: Ettore 44016 Extension REA-C-H Pole, 16-Feet by Ettore and Fruit Picker Head (TR20090)

Neil’s comment: “I just love this pole because it is so easy to adjust. I also like that I can throw it in the car if I’m going to pick fruit alongside the road or at a friend’s house.”

I hope this helps. How wonderful to have beautiful green parrots, bats, and shrews at your home. As you saw from the post, we share our mango with the little Gold Dust Day Geckos who flock to our morning breakfast table. Their antics are so entertaining.
      Nan

    • I am glad you are have enjoyed reading the web posts. Crater Lake was impressive in how steep it is all the way around. I think it has stayed so pristine because no roads to the lake edge! Last leg post about to come out in a few days 😉

  17. Hello Nanette,
the pictures are so wonderful. And it is great to hear something about your life.
We wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season and all the best for 2015.
    Enjoy! Love Barbara

  18. I love the great pictures to go with your fun, interesting narrative. Wish you would be in the Fremont, CA area! Would love to see you again.

    • It was a great trip. Glad you are enjoying the pictures and narrative. We will try to be in touch next time we are in your area!

  19. The gecko photos are beyond adorable–what incredible smiles they have! The reed fence looks very natural and fine until those recalcitrant plants grow up. Good job!

  20. It is amazing how fast the kids are growing! You are blessed to have such a caring, wonderful family. But then no one deserves it more than you do.
    Be well.
    Love,
    Jill

  21. Hi Nan & Neil

  22. Thanks for sharing the beautiful ocean and the warm islands! I am sitting by the fire this morning watching snow fall-skied yesterday, but today I think I will stay cozy. The cal poly group will be meeting on the central coast in slo county wine country early August. Would love to see you there! Think about it.
Hope you and loved ones have a great Christmas and please say hi for me.
    Peace on earth!

  23. Nan, thanks for sending this link to your page. Good to hear how life is treating you over your way — especially when it sounds so positive. Love the geckos — how do you rate GREEN ones?!! I don’t remember seeing those when we were living there. Cute! Hugs to you both, happy holidays with your family and friends — Dee

  24. Hi Nan,
So good to be reminded about life on Maui:-)
The plumeria aroma in the breeze, the bird calls, Mother Maui’s warm embrace 🙂
You sound so content and relaxed, I am very happy for you!
Have an exceptional Christmas with your many, many family members, how wonderful to have so many together at this time, and even being neighbors!!
Mele Kalikimaka dear Nan and Neil, you have a special place in my heart:-)

Sounds like you guys still have the warmth and beauty of the islands around you. Makes me happy and sad at the same time. Well Merry Christmas – Ahui hou! Dayna and Al

  27. I am trying to help a Kathleen Harter born in Lima, Ohio. She was adopted out. She is looking for her 2 older siblings. Their names are Debbie and the other sisters name begins with a S and she thinks it might be Sherri. They was born between 1950-1955. Her mothers name is Jane Ann Harter from Lima Ohio. Kathleen goes by Kathy. I was wondering if there was a possibility that you might be able to help with the information I provided. Thanks Debby Harter Yothers. dabbylynn@yahoo.com

  28. Very wonderful to see your beautiful surroundings
and happy face. It’s gray, wet and foggy here, and
yet it has a beauty of its own.
Ray’s mom Dorothy died in late November.
Very best to both of you from both of us.

  31. Nan, I am sorry I missed you and missed Melanie by 2 days I was at Max and Janets from July 10th until June 30th. I enjoyed your article and pictures. Janet told me about your mother falling. She was lucky she wasn’t hurt worse.

    • I missed seeing you too Aunt Barb. I am glad you got to visit with your Van Wert family for so long. Mom seems to be recovering quickly. I think it was the desert heat that made her faint.

  32. Nan, what a fantastic family you have–many generations together enjoying each others’ company and helping with a great celebration. Congratulations!

  33. Nanette,
Great pictures. Beautiful bride. Handsome groom. They look so happy. Wishing them all the best. Thanks for sharing.

    Love,

    Karen

  34. Nan, thanks so much for keeping me up-to-date on the “Hawaain” family! I get such a kick out of seeing Quentin grow! My friend David and I are planning to take our trawler up from Washington, Puget Sound area, to Alaska next summer. Hope to be seeing some of those wonderful sights that you and Neil saw!

  35. My friends on the Big Island planted pineapples in their back yard when they moved there in 1999. They only plant the white pineapples. People on the Mainland think yellow is the only kind of pineapple. The White ones are better!

    • It is nice to have the variety of tropical fruit here. i do miss apricots and cherries. We do have them shipped in here summer, but we are busy enjoying mangoes so don’t buy many.

  36. We love mangos, but unfortunatly we have to buy them! And they had a long trip.
Sometimes we have to visit you and eat your mangos.
    Lots of love Barbara

    • Would love to have a visit from you! Mangos in the summer months; whales in the winter months; beautiful weather year round! Sounds like you had a great trip to California.

  37. Hey it looks so great! I am for sure going to sign up for notifications! I guess those books have already payed off! 🙂 I can’t wait to make my own website someday.

    Take care,
    Love,

  39. Fantastic photos and love the updates on life, travels, and family! Such a coincidence (if there is such a thing) because I was thinking about Hawaii this morning as I rode my bike into work at 39 degrees. The peaks of the mountain had a beautiful rosy glow, a sure sign of fall weather. Time to chop the firewood.
Thanks for the picutres and the updates!

    • Amazing, you are reaching near freezing already and heard Jason’s family in Oklahoma was dealing with 107 temps and a broken AC. Maui misses you. Come visit.

  40. Dear Nan
So enjoyed your account of the trip you did with Audrey and Bill to Alaska. Neil’s photos as always were just great. Much looking forward to regular up date on your new blog site. Take care and much love Vanessa (Singapore)
