Matanuska Glacier, Alaska
July 2007

One description of a glacier is a "river of ice"; the ice flows downward compacting, compressing and taking some of the rock beneath it. Matanuska Glacier flows down a valley and to the river basin. We had a great view of it from the highway before descending down to it.

The information sign at the park overlook was a kick to read.

And suddenly there we were walking on thousand-year-old ice!

Neil explored the crevices.

And then walked on what looks like a lake but was just thin layer of water.

That tiny speck on the left center is a climber.

The blue ice just glows in places. Someone said it was all the ice worm eyes looking out at you!

Neil was taking a picture of me but he also wanted to get the climbers in the background.
