We
went to Mendocino for a
few day getaway before we returned home to Maui. It happened to be over
Valentine's Day!
Mendocino is the turn of the century logging town and many of
the buildings have been restored and it maintains the beautiful early
architecture. It is now an artist area and a resort community.
Through the efforts of many people in the 60s, the headlands was saved
from development and reserved as an open area.
We spent our first evening and much of the next day hiking around the
headlands and finding incredible bays. One was almost turquoise blue
like you would expect in the tropics.
Had a wonderful time staying in a "Water Tower" (it is
still being used for the hot tubs) at Sweetwater Inn.
We took advantage of the included use of the redwood hot
tubs and soaked nightly in the wonderful warm water.
Our suite included a fireplace which Neil enjoyed lighting each night, plus an upstairs bedroom with an ocean
view!
Just north of Mendocino is Russian Gulch Park.
Caspar Headlands is just around the next bend.
We reached the coast at Navarro River and Beach from the inland road.
However going back, we stayed on Hwy 1 driving the coast.
The views were incredible. We were amazed at this house right on the
cliff with a waterfall dropping from the back yard.
Point Arena has one of the few remaining lighthouses you can visit.
Look at the rocks closely. See the Sealions laying on them?
It's an amazing view from the top of Point Arena Lighthouse.
The fog was moving in and out throughout the day to reveal incredible
rugged coastline views!
And we end another wonderful adventure.
