Our Cottage's New Roof
July 2009
We have had a roof leak
for five years and have put up a tarp every winter during rainy season. I am thrilled that we got a new roof this year.. Neil
took photos of the progress of the roof being put on the
cottage.
The first few show the state of the old roof and tarp plus how the
mango tree was so prolific this year (fruit still green at the time of
the photos) that it was literally laying on the roof.
In preparation for the
activity on the roof, we put up plastic sheeting
inside the house to catch the debris. We needed both ladders inside to
cover the whole ceiling.
Five workers and three
trucks showed up Monday morning and they were
already using the chainsaw on the tree by the time I was back from my
beach walk before 8 am! Next came tearing up the shingles. Neil said
the four forked tool they used reminded him of what is used for digging
up potatoes.
They really cleaned up
the ground mess well and between the tree and the shingles, they filled
two trucks. Then they started tossing
the new up on the roof:
We did see some
"daylight" a few places looking up from inside when the old was off and
new not yet on!
At the end of Day One,
the felt was installed and new shingles in
bundles were spread out on the roof. The photo also shows what a nice
job they did trimming the tree to get it up but still allow some shade
branches over the house.
Next day they finished
the job of nailing in all the new shingles!
Then they were done and
it looks great!
And a few photos of the
aftermath. We were so thankful to have all the
plastic up to catch the old termite droppings and other debris that
came through the cracks in the open ceiling and out of the wood. All
together we probably had about 3/4 of a quart of debris caught in the
plastic! We ended up vacuuming the entire ceiling as we incrementally
took the plastic down. It looks great now.
Here's a view of cottage
with the new roof and trimmed tree.
