Hawaii Diving
May 2001

Even though Hawaii is rather young compared to Indonesia or the Caribbean, we have a lot of unique and beautiful fish.

Racoon ButterflyfishLong nose butterfly, Reticulated butterfly, multiband butterfly

A large school of Racoon Butterflyfish are looking for Sargent fish eggs on the right. Three type of Buterflyfish on the left: the Longnose in the forground, the Pebbled (endemic) to the left, and the Reticulated (rare) in the back right.
Yellowtail WrasseMoorish Idol
One of my favorites is the Yellowtail Wrasse. It is orange and white as a juvenile, and changes to the this beautiful coloring with a bright yellow tail. The Moorish Idol is also an elegant fish in a family all it's own.
Peacock GrouperOrangespine UnicornfishBullethead Parrotfish
Other fish that add color to reef are the Peacock Grouper, the Orangespine Unicorn, and the Bullethead Parrotfish.
Frogfish
Yes, there is really a fish in this picture. It is the yellow blob with alge growing on it. It is called a Commerson"s Frogfish The head is facing the left
Whitetip Reef Shark
A non-agressive Whitetip Reef Shark hides in caves during the day until we frightened him out so we could take a look.

Javanese Moray EelHawaiian Green Sea Turtle

A very rare sight is this Javanese Moray Eel. The was hugh but not common in Hawaii waters. The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is a much more common and friendly sight.
Colonial Cup CoralSpiny OysterTiger Cowry
Invertibreas (no internal bone structure) include the yellow and orange Cup Coral, the Spiny Oyster, and the Tiger Cowry.

Another one of my favorite underwater creatures!
