Peahi (Jaws) Waves
December 16, 2004

Well, these aren't exactly diving pictures but they are of the ocean! Neil made everybody get up early so we could go to Peahi, commonly referred to as "Jaws," to see some big-wave riding. He took some pictures with our little digital camera zoomed in to the max. Figure out for yourself how big the waves are. The little black speck at the end of the streak of white-water wake is the 5 or 6 foot tall surfer (slightly crouching), and the helicopters (10 feet high?) are closer to the camera than the waves. We saw several wipe-outs and sometimes the jet skis could not get close to the surfer until after they had been pounded by 3 or 4 waves, and by that time they are dangerously close to the rocks. A few of them had to be rescued by helicopter.
